SHAHEED/WITNESS/KASHMIR
BRINGING WITNESS BOOK IN ROOM FOR BIENNALE OF SYDNEY

Exhibition Design

Overview

Witness is a photobook capturing life under conflict in Kashmir. Recognised by the New York Times and awarded for its design, the book found global attention. When it was invited to the 22nd Biennale of Sydney, the challenge was to turn its emotional depth into an experience people could physically step into. The result was Shaheed/Witness/Kashmir, an exhibition that transformed the book into space.

Our approach

We designed the exhibition to feel like evidence, not just a display. There were no explanations on the walls, only space filled with memory and tension. Red threads hung from the ceiling like a warning. A cloth tape ran through the space, just like the one that ties the book together. Light tables, screens, and prints broke the quiet and showed moments that were hard to forget.

Two Sites

The installation was shown in two places. At Cockatoo Island, big prints on mesh were displayed on old machine sheds stark and silent, like a sign of what was coming. At Campbelltown, the full work opened up. Visitors didn’t just look at Kashmir. They stepped into it.
